From its potent anti-inflammatory support to supporting weight loss, the broad health benefits of olive oil are well established. Olive oil is rich in polyphenols, and unless you’re Italian, odds are that you’d do well to increase your intake.

But did you know those benefits vary greatly depending on how the olives are sourced and oil is made?

Gundry MD Olive Oil, for example, has 30x more polyphenols, making it far more potent than your average extra virgin fare. In this review I’ll explain how this incredible feat is made possible.

More polyphenols means more antioxidants. Who doesn’t want more of those?

Manufacturing Matters

Forget about cold-pressed: if your mission is to promote your health, you want vacuum-extracted olive oil.

Why? In the hour or so that it takes for an olive to pass through a conventional mill, it undergoes tremendous oxidation, resulting in a significant loss of volatile aromas, characteristic flavors and health-giving anti-oxidants (polyphenols and tocopherals).

Making this process “cold” does little to help.

Get 8x More Polyphenols (and Better Taste)

Vacuum Extraction, on the other hand, dramatically reduces exposure to oxygen. The  result is an oil of greater fragrance, flavor, balance and nutrition–all because polyphenol levels are much, much higher.

Apollo Olive Oil is one of only five producers in the world that vacuum extracts their oils. Polyphenol levels in their olive oil are typically 500 ppm to 800 ppm, which is up to 8x higher than the best cold processed oils.

Judges agree that it tastes every bit as good as it is for your health: Apollo Olive Oil has won dozens of prestigious awards, including Flos Olei 2018. The stuff is amazing. It’s hard to believe that you can actually do better…

Get 30x More Polyphenols

When I originally wrote this article in 2018, Apollo was the highest in polyphenols of anything I could find. That’s impressive, but it’s still only a fraction of what Dr. Steven Gundry has managed to obtain in the olive oil he sells under his Gundry MD brand.

The reason it’s 30x richer in polyphenols is that the olives are grown in the Moroccan desert: as the plants adapt, they naturally boost their polyphenol production.

Given Dr. Gundry’s love affair with olive oil, cooking and superfoods, it’s no surprise that he got his hands on the most potent olives that seem to exist today. He recommends that you consume olive oil daily.

Gundry MD Olive Oil Reviews

Gundry MD Olive Oil is getting rave reviews, and having rapidly gone through a bottle myself (next time I’m getting three!), I have to agree that this investment in my health is worth it.

You can absolutely tell this is different from other extra virgin brands–the polyphenols impart a unique taste. It’s delicious!

Dr. Gundry’s olive oil has become a staple for me. I consume it daily and gift it to friends and family.

Choosing Your Apollo Olive Oil: Go for Gold

If you go with Apollo, the only question left is which to choose? There are three categories to choose from: Gold Series, Premium and Economy. If you want to maximize polyphenol intake, be sure to select from the Gold or Premium series.

Keep on scrolling or jump down to see a full gallery of all your options. Note that Coratina Gold has the highest antioxidant count with 661 mg/Kg polyphenols and 137 mg/Kg tocopherols (a whopping 798 mg/Kg total). However, they’re all high in polyphenols, so you may want to go with whatever flavor profile sounds the most appealing.

No one says you can only get just one bottle, of course. I’ve been consuming Apollo’s olive oils almost daily for years, and I like to have a few different flavors on hand so that I can match the flavor to whatever I am cooking. Impress your guests!

More Polyphenols, Less Cash: Get $10 Off Your First Bottle

Super Premium olive oils like Apollo don’t come cheap, but when you think about the 8x boost in polyphenols, it’s worth it. Your good health is priceless, after all, and if your olive oil isn’t vacuum extracted you’re leaving precious antioxidants on the table (pun intended!).

There’s also a great deal available for new customers: use promo code FirstTimeBuyer to get $10 off. You’ll get olive oil that’s better than anything you can find in Whole Foods, for less.

Recent Awards

Gold Series Organic Extra Virgin

Apollo’s orchards enable them to mill many different varieties rare to California. Each year, they proudly showcase a few of these special mono-varietals or orchard blends in their Gold Series.

These olive oils are highly prized for their uniqueness, special flavors and ultra-high polyphenol content. Limited quantities are available only on Apollo’s website.

Aglandau

The French Aglandau is renowned for its special fruitiness.  Artichoke and fresh almond aromas lead into sweet, well balanced flavors that finish with a long, gentle spiciness. Ideal with bread, mild foods, and creamy dishes.

495 mg/Kg polyphenols + 265 mg/Kg tocopherols = 760 mg/Kg total antioxidants

Grossane

Grossane is originally from France. Young trees stretch across the western face of our orchard, and produce pleasant walnut, grassy, and fresh-cut vegetable flavors. With its long finish, Grossane is best raw, on steamed vegetables and fresh salads.

>492 mg/Kg polyphenols + 266 mg/Kg tocopherols = 758 mg/Kg total antioxidants

Coratina

Coratina is a lively Italian variety. Our west-facing trees produce a full-bodied, cinnamon-scented, emerald green oil with a hint of radicchio, and a rich pungency. Enjoy drizzled on  spiced dishes, or paired with balsamic vinegar.

661 mg/Kg polyphenols + 137 mg/Kg tocopherols = 798 mg/Kg total antioxidants

 Barouni

The first in our Gold Series of special varieties, Barouni is a lively Tunisian variety perfectly suited to our Sierra foothills. We love it for its exotic overtones, intensity and rich pungency. Barouni is great for cooking lamb, grilling fish and vegetables.

522 mg/Kg polyphenols + 168 mg/Kg tocopherols = 690 mg/Kg total antioxidants

Premium Organic Extra Virgin

Apollo’s flagship oils, Mistral and Sierra, are produced every year, and you can rely on their consistent, award-winning quality. Since Apollo Olive Oil started in 2001, these oils have nearly always been Gold Medal winners.

Moreover, 50% of the time, one or the other has been recognized as Best of Class, or even Best of Show in the most prestigious US competitions – not counting numerous recognitions in Europe. Polyphenol content may not be quite as high as the Gold Series oils, but it’s still exceptionally high.

Mistral

Mistral has always been Apollo’s most awarded oil. Named for the famed wind of Provence, it is based on French varieties and the delicate Italian Ascolano. Sweet, rounded and rich, Mistral will enhance seafood, salads, mushrooms and most white wine dishes.

428 mg/Kg polyphenols + 272 mg/Kg tocopherols = 700 mg/Kg total antioxidants

Sierra

Sierra, harvested from decades-old trees in the Sierra foothills, is lusty and pleasingly assertive. With grassy overtones, Sierra is an ideal complement to earthy dishes, such as soups, stews and pasta sauces, and is the perfect finish for all grilled foods.

520 mg/Kg polyphenols + 150 mg/Kg tocopherols = 670 mg/Kg total antioxidant

Economy Organic Extra Virgin

SALÚTE – meaning “Good Health” in Italian –  for all the good things olive oil has to offer. Harvested and milled to the same exacting standards as the world-renowned Mistral and Sierra oils, SALÚTE is an all-around cooking oil, perfect even for deep frying. Available in two sizes, this oil adds real extra virgin benefits to any meal.

Salute

SALÚTE is a blend of Mediterranean varieties and California Mission. The convenient 375 ml bottle has a built-in easy pour spout.

Salute (bulk)

SALÚTE is a blend of Mediterranean varieties and California Mission. This economical 1.32 gallon packaging protects the SALÚTE from light and oxidation with a collapsing interior membrane. The convenience of an unbreakable box with a spout dispenser is an added benefit. Kept in a cool area, the SALÚTE will remain stable for quite a long time in this modern packaging.

FAQs

How much does Gundry MD olive oil cost?

Like all authentic premium extra virgin all of oils, Gundry MD olive oil is more expensive than what you will find on the shelf at the store. However, the value is there. Between the outstanding flavor and massive health benefits that come with so many polyphenols, your money is well spent. It retails for $49. However, if you purchase using the links above on this page, you will save 33%. If you buy it in bulk, you’ll save 40%.

What olive oil does Dr. Gundry recommend?

Dr. Gundry recommends cold-pressed, extra virgin high-polyphenol olive oil. He has not come out and recommended a specific brand, but in 2019 he did launch his own, Gundry MD high polyphenol olive oil.

How much olive oil does Dr. Gundry recommend consuming?

Lots. And lots. And then some more. His famous saying is “the purpose of food is to get olive oil in your mouth”. He has not recommended a specific amount, because it will vary depending on the individual, but more is obviously better. He probably consumes several ounces a day on average. His recipes call for copious amounts.

Are there coupons, promo codes or vouchers available?

Generally, no. There are occasional flash sales if you keep your eyes peeled and they are usually 20% off. The good news is that you can use the links on this page to save 33%, or up to 40% if you buy in bulk.

What’s the polyphenol content in Gundry MD olive oil?

Gundry MD olive oil has an astounding 30x the number of polyphenols compared to standard extra virgin fare. This is because it is made from Moroccan olives that grow in harsh desert conditions. They produce extra polyphenols to protect themselves from the climate.

Where do the olives in Gundry MD olive oil come from?

They come from Morocco. Specifically, the high Moroccan desert. Harsh climate conditions force the olive trees to adapt, resulting in a massive increase in polyphenols.

Which olive oil brands are richest in polyphenols?

Dr. Gundry‘s olive oil is the richest, with 30x more than average. Apollo was the second highest that I could find, being 8x over the norm. There’s some other olive oil brands out there that may come close, but I did not find them in my research.

What’s the Gundry MD olive oil scam?

OK…so I hesitated to waste my readers’ time with this but it needs to be addressed. A random YouTuber made a BIZARRE video that claimed that olive oil’s health benefits are exaggerated, and pointed blame at Dr. Gundry because he recommends it. This person is not a nutritionist and has zero qualifications to make such judgements, while the health benefits of olive oil couldn’t be more well established. Notably, the video came out in early 2018, long before Gundry MD Olive oil even existed. The story gained traction only because the Internet can’t resist a good scam rumour! Don’t watch the video. All you’ll be doing is helping the real scammer make money from YouTube ads. Instead, ignore this silly rumor and move on with your life. When it comes to olive oil, the only scam is that most of it isn’t 100% extra virgin as claimed.
