Plant Protein Powerhouse or Not Good Enough? (Nutritionist Reacts)

Finding a tasty and nutritious vegan protein bar can be difficult.

Some vegan protein bars contain harmful ingredients such as:

  • Alcohol sugars
  • Fake fibers
  • Unhealthy fats

They may also have a poor balance of macronutrients. For instance, a bar may contain too little protein or fiber, depending on what diet you’re on.

Many vegan protein bars also have an unpleasant chalky texture.

What’s more, they can be loaded with unsafe artificial ingredients. Have you wondered yet how exactly good! bars managed to coat the “birthday cake” bar in rainbow frosting? Remember: Just because it’s vegan doesn’t mean it’s healthy!

good! snacks vegan protein bars claim to be just what you’ve been looking for—a vegan, gluten-free protein bar that tastes like candy.

Each good! snacks bar contains 15 grams of protein, 11–13 grams of dietary fiber, and only 10 grams of sugar.

Let’s analyze good! snacks to ascertain whether they’re the ideal vegan protein bar they claim to be. We’ll use a scale of 1–5 to rate indicators including ingredients, macros, taste, texture, protein content, and overall value.

Rating the good! snacks Bar

good! snacks Bar

The good! snacks vegan protein bar prides itself on being a guilt-free vegan indulgence.

Let’s examine the bar’s nutritional macros, ingredients, protein content, taste and texture, sugar content, and overall value to determine the validity of these claims.

Macros

Each good! snacks bar contains 15 grams of protein sourced from plant-based ingredients such as fava bean protein, brown rice protein, peanut butter, and almond butter.

The bars are also high in fiber, with each bar containing 11–12 grams of fiber. This is enough fiber to keep you full and satiated.

The good! snacks bar contains 10 grams of sugar—enough to be sweet without causing too much concern. However, that includes 9 grams of added sugars, which have been linked to heart disease risk factors.

In addition, the bar is low-fat (6–10 grams) and doesn’t contain trans fats or cholesterol.

The downside is that the good! snacks bar is high in carbs (26–30 grams), which makes it unsuitable for low-carb diets.

Plant Protein Content

Each good! snacks bar contains 15 grams of plant-based protein. This protein comes from ingredients such as:

  • Fava bean
  • Brown rice
  • Almond butter
  • Peanut butter

Meeting 22–23% of the required daily intake, this amount of protein will support your metabolism, help build and heal muscles, and curb your hunger and cravings.

The good! snacks bar is, therefore, a good pre- and post-workout snack. It also makes a great mid-afternoon snack.

Fiber Content

Each good! snacks protein bar contains 11–12 grams of fiber. That amount of fiber is sufficient to keep you full between meals.

Most adults can safely consume around 10–12 grams of fiber in one meal.

The fiber in the good! snacks bar comes from tapioca fiber and other plant-based ingredients. Tapioca fiber, which is frequently a hidden form of isomalto-oligosaccharide (IMO), is a processed fiber that has been shown to cause spikes in blood sugar.

Ingredients

made fresh and taste

As the name suggests, the good! snacks protein bar promises to be a healthy, tasty, vegan treat.

To this end, the manufacturer claims to use high-quality plant-based ingredients. Unfortunately, I cannot say that I agree. Let’s take a close look.

Ingredients in a good! snacks bar include:

  • Fava bean protein
  • Brown rice protein
  • Soluble tapioca fiber
  • Tapioca syrup
  • Cane sugar
  • Palm kernel oil
  • Almond butter
  • Natural flavors
  • Citric acid
  • Palm oil
  • Vegetable glycerin
  • Sunflower lecithin
  • High oleic sunflower oil
  • Salt
  • Peanut butter

However, there are some concerns with the ingredients in this bar.

Firstly, it contains tapioca fiber—a processed fiber that can cause digestive distress in some people.

Secondly, it contains palm kernel oil, which has been linked to environmental concerns. If you chose a vegan diet for environmental reasons, you may have to rethink buying this bar.

Thirdly, the bar is manufactured on equipment that also processes wheat, milk, soy, eggs, and fish. That means the good! snacks bar might have traces of gluten and non-vegan ingredients—even though it’s certified gluten-free.

On the upside, you will love that good! snacks bar doesn’t use pea protein, which can trigger allergies in some people. The protein bar is also made with natural flavors and sweeteners.

Sugar Content

As we’ve pointed out, one of the best features of the good! snacks protein bar is that it contains natural flavors and sweeteners.

It derives its sweetness from cane sugar and tapioca syrup.

The sugar content (10 grams) is just enough to make it a mild vegan guilty pleasure. The bad news is that 9 grams of that are added sugars, which have no health benefits and, in excess, are associated with heart disease risk factors.

Taste and Texture

good! snacks Bar

The good! snacks bar doesn’t disappoint when it comes to taste and texture.

Unlike the chalky bars you’re likely to encounter in this category, good! snacks are truly tasty bars. They also have a pleasant texture.

With eight amazing flavors to choose from, you’ll be spoiled for choice. I have to admit the Birthday Cake flavor satisfied my sweet tooth. But given all the sugar and ingredient profile, the pleasure was a very guilty one.

Overall Value

Made from real plant-based ingredients, the good! snacks bar is truly vegan.

Unlike most vegan bars, it has a soft texture and comes in great flavors to indulge your sweet tooth.

However, it is high in carbs and contains some worrisome ingredients.

Even so, good! snacks are much better than many bars in this category, which drives up their overall value.
